The San Francisco Bay Area was hit by an earthquake in the early morning hours on Thursday according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).  The quake was a 4.4 magnitude event and hit just after 2:30am local time.  Its epicenter was on the eastern edge of Berkeley and lasted about 10 seconds.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but enough people took to social media that it made the quake a top trending topic worldwide.  Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin said he would be monitoring for damage and implored people to be aware of aftershocks.
