Controversial Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, Declares for Senate

The former Sheriff of Maricopa Country, Arizona, Joe Arpaio declared his candidacy for US Senate today.  The Sheriff is best known for his hardline stance on immigration and controversial practices employed in correctional facilities in his jurisdiction.

In an interview with The Washington Examiner, Arpaio said, “I have a lot to offer. I’m a big supporter of President Trump.  I would not be doing this if I thought that I could not win. I’m not here to get my name in the paper, I get that every day, anyway,” Arpaio said.

Arpaio served as Maricopa County Sheriff for 24 years before being defeated in 2016.  He was convicted last year of criminal contempt for refusing to comply with a court order in a racial-profiling case.  President Trump pardoned Arpaio last summer.
