Senator John McCain: “We Are Doing Putin’s Job for Him”

Republican Senator John McCain assailed the efforts of fellow Republicans Friday, to undermine the FBI’s and the Department of Justice’s investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.  “If we continue to undermine our own rule of law, we are doing Putin’s job for him,” McCain wrote.

McCain cited Putin’s goal of sowing division, discord and disunity in U.S. society and undermining trust in democratic institutions as a warning.  “I fear [Russia] succeeded in fueling political discord and dividing us from one another,” McCain added.  “The latest attacks on the FBI and Department of Justice serve no American interests — no party, no president’s, only Putin’s.

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee released a controversial memo today that heavily criticizes the FBI and DOJ for alleged abuses of FISA, in obtaining warrants to spy on the Trump campaign.  The FBI, DOJ and Congressional Democrats have questioned the accuracy of the information contained in the memo.

Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee have written a memo in response.  A vote on whether to make that memo public is scheduled for Monday.
