A Black Lives Matter-supporting teacher took to Twitter this week to arguing that math is accepted only due to “western imperialism.”
“Nope the idea of 2 + 2 equaling 4 is cultural and because of western imperialism/colonization, we think of it as the only way of knowing,” wrote Brittany Marshall.
It’s unclear what Marshall meant by math equations being “cultural.”
According to her bio Marshall is a teacher and scholar and is also studying for a PhD at Rutgers University.
The idea of 2+2 not equaling 4 is made famous by George Orwell’s classic 1984, when the government, after amassing too much power, tortured dissenters until they believed it could equal 5.
