Walmart to Launch Direct Competitor to Amazon Prime This Month

Business Headlines U.S.

Walmart, the nation’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer is planning to launch Walmart+, a direct competitor to Amazon Prime this month.

Walmart+ will cost $98 a year and include several perks for subscribers such as same-day delivery of groceries and general merchandise, discounts on gas at Walmart stations and early access to product deals.

Walmart originally planned to launch the service in March or April but decided to postpone the launch due to Covid19.

Amazon prime, started in 2005, has grown into a mega-program for the online marketplace. It now has more than 150 million members globally.

Walmart leadership hopes their program will offer enough value that it will gain subscribers but differentiate itself enough that direct perk-to-perk comparisons with Prime will be avoided.
