The city of Portland has recorded the highest number of homicides in any one-month period – 15 – than any other one-month period in the past 30 years. The city has seen a total of 24 homicides so far this year.
The city has seen riots, violence and civil unrest daily for more than two consecutive months.
Shootings have more than doubled in July compared to July 2019, and there has also been a spike in assaults, burglaries and vandalism.
The Portland City Council voted last month to cut more than $15 million from the police budget and Portland’s Gun Violence Reduction Team was one of several police units disbanded because of those cuts.
