Wisconsin Legislators Seek Change in Law That Will Allow DACA Recipients to Become Police Officers

Headlines Politics U.S.

Two Republican legislators from Wisconsin, Reps. Dave Steffen (Green Bay) and John Macco (Ledgeview), are seeking a change to Wisconsin law that will allow illegal immigrants that have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to become police officers.

Under current state law, illegal immigrants are ineligible to become police officers.

The legislators believe the change will bring diversity to the force.

The proposal was made after a special legislative session on police reform which followed deadly protests and riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, late this summer in the wake of the shooting of an African-American man, Jacob Blake, by police.
