Additional leaked documents show the FBI agent assigned to the case against Michael Flynn, Agent William Barnett, believed the case was “top down” and that it was being used to “get Trump.”
“Top down” in FBI parlance means instructions were coming from the very top of FBI hierarchy. In Flynn’s case that would implicate former FBI Director James Comey, if not then-President Barack Obama himself.
Barnett felt the rationale for the investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign “was not great. Another agent thought it was “an exercise in futility.”

Barnett eventually advocated for shutting the case down because “there was nothing left to do.” That request was denied.
As the Flynn investigation wound down, Agent Barnett suggested interviewing Flynn and closing the case.

Barnett was so uncomfortable with the course of the investigation that he eventually asked to be taken off the case because it “could result in an IG investigation.”
How abusive was the Flynn investigation?
It was so bad that Agent Barnett told his boss he wanted off the cases.
