New York City Principals Issue Vote of No Confidence in De Blasio, Urge State to take Over City Schools

Headlines Politics U.S.

Principals of New York City public schools have come together in issuing a unanimous vote of no confidence in New York Mayor Bill De Blasio. They are also asking the Mayor to cede control of schools to Governor Andrew Cuomo for the foreseeable future.

The schools’ leaders are asking for the state to take control of city schools until there is a vaccine available to combat the Covid19 pandemic – something that isn’t expected until next year.

Anger at the Mayor boiled over after De Blasio ignored the advice of teachers and administrators over how the city should deal with the Covid pandemic. A central issue in the planning is the coming shortage of teachers for the upcoming school year.

De Blasio contends that the shortage only became evident in recent weeks, something school officials took as an affront.

“There are no easy answers…but the failure here has been a failure to anticipate the obvious,” one former NYC principal told WSJ.
