Three US cities are suing the Pentagon for failing to report military convictions to a federal database that would keep firearms out of the hands of convicted criminals. The suit was filed in a federal district court in Virginia on behalf of the cities of New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
The cities are looking to monitor compliance with reporting requirements. The Pentagon has admitted that it has failed to observe the reporting requirements for years, and separate investigations have found that military branches fail to properly report the information 30% of the time.
The lawsuit was filed in cooperation with a gun control advocacy group run by former Democratic congresswoman, and shooting victim, Gabby Giffords.
