Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore has filed a lawsuit alleging voter fraud in the special election in which he ran on December 12. The court filing occurred just hours before the state canvassing board was to declare Doug Jones, Moore’s opponent, the winner.
Moore believes there were voting irregularities in the election, and is calling for an investigation and, eventually, a new election. The Alabama special election gained national attention when it was alleged that Moore had inappropriate contact with teenage girls back in the late 1970s and early 80s when he was in his early 30s. Moore has denied the allegations. Doug Jones defeated Roy Moore in the special election with 49% of the vote to Moore’s 48%
