In his first public comments since protests in his country began, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said protestors in his country have the right to criticize but not to destroy public property. Protests in Iran have continued into their fourth straight day. According to Iranian authorities, two protestors were killed in the violence. The government has blamed “foreign agents” for the uprisings.
The Iranian government has also “temporarily” shut down popular social media apps in an effort to “maintain tranquility.” The protest began as a show of displeasure with Iran’s economic situation but has turned political. The protests are the largest since the huge rallies of 2009.
