North Korea has agreed to send a delegation of athletes to the Olympic Winter Games to be held next month in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The decision was announced today after the two countries held their first face-to-face talks in over two years. The two countries also agreed to hold military talks aimed at reducing tensions which had become heightened over recent months.
The development in relations came after North Korean leader, Kin Jong-Un gave a New Year’s Day address in which he made overtures about melting frozen North-South relations. He cited the importance of 2018 in both countries’ histories. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of the North Korean nation and it’s the year in which South Korea will host the Winter Olympics. The US and South Korea had announced a suspension of military exercises during the games.
