House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi rejected a proposal that would reopen the government that Senate Democrats have pledged to support.
“I don’t see that there’s any reason — I’m speaking personally and hearing from my members — to support what was put forth,” Pelosi said to reporters. Both Pelosi and her number two oppose the compromise, but are still debating whether they will push their members to do so as well.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to bring votes to the Senate floor that will address DACA, disaster relief and some other issues Democrats have been demanding votes on, in exchange for their support for a continuing resolution that will keep the government open until February 8.
Pelosi has said however, that she would need assurances from Speaker of the House Paul Ryan before supporting any deal made in the Senate. The last major attempt at immigration reform passed in the Senate with a large majority in 2013 but was never brought up for a vote by the GOP-led House at that time. Democrats are worried the same could happen with a bill passed now.
The bill to reopen the government will likely pass in the House even if it is opposed by the majority of Democrats. The coming weeks will be the test of the terms of the agreement reached today.
