Tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia have reached a fever pitch as the latest round of talks have failed to produce a compromise on a hydroelectric plant being built in Ethiopia. The dam is being built on the Blue Nile, which is the main artery feeding into the Grand Nile.
Construction of the dam will lead to severe decay in valley waters where up to 90% of the Egyptian population lives. The issue is one of vital national security to the Egyptians. Sudan, which lies between Egypt and Ethiopia, also sees the project as a threat to local water supply.
The three countries have been allies for centuries and it is only within the last several years the issue has become this dire. Many in the area suspect foreign influence in the dam project and swaying the Ethiopian’s actions.
