According to a report released this week, former State Department official Jonathan Winer destroyed several years worth of reports from former UK intelligence officer Christopher Steele in January 2017.
The reports were destroyed by Winer at Steele’s request.
Steele is the author of the now infamous Steele Dossier alleging compromising information the Russian government had on then-candidate Donald Trump.
In addition to receiving reports from Steele, Winer also gave Steele several anti-Trump memos he had received from Hillary Clinton associate Sidney Blumenthal. Winer claims he didn’t think Steele would share the Clinton-sourced information with anyone else in the government.
Steele would eventually share them with the FBI.
