The Republican National Committee is set to adopt a new resolution “refuting the legitimacy of the Southern Poverty Law Center to identify hate groups.”
“RESOLVED, That the SPLC is a radical organization and that the federal government should not view this organization as a legitimate foundation equipped to provide actionable information to DHS or any other government agency,” the resolution reads.
The SPLC called the resolution an “attack” and a political ploy orchestrated to gain power.
The group insists that it is devoted only to “pushing back against their dehumanizing rhetoric.” But there many examples of their attacks being purposefully personal and even inciting violence.
Critics also point to the fact that the SPLC spends very little of the money it collects.
“They’ve never spent more than 31 percent of the money they were bringing in on programs, and sometimes they spent as little as 18 percent. Most nonprofits spend about 75 percent on programs,” said Montgomery Advertiser Managing Editor Jim Tharpe in a talk for Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism.
