The United States is weighing formally labeling China’s treatment of ethnic Muslim minority Uighurs in their country a “genocide,” according to officials.
Both activists and lawmakers have been pushing for the designation in recent months but a reluctance to further fray tensions between the two countries has prevailed.
The internal deliberations are still at the early stages, according to officials. If there’s not enough consensus for the term “genocide” the administration could instead use other language such as “crimes against humanity” or “ethnic cleansing.”
It’s estimated that more than one million are being held in internment camps in China where they are being “reeducated,” forced to renounce their religion and being used as forced labor.
A spokesperson for Joe Biden has indicated that the former VP supports the designation, a factor that could influence President Trump’s decision.
