An Australian woman has been sentenced to 6 months in jail after violating a quarantine order for Covid19, reports say.
Asher Faye Vander Sanden, 28, had been permitted to fly home to Perth, Western Australia, where she was ordered to quarantine at a hotel for 14 days – at her own expense – after spending a month in the hard-hit state of Victoria.
Instead, authorities say Vander Sanden hid inside of a car that was being transported on a truck and crossed the border. She did not tell authorities of whereabouts and was arrested on August 12, 10 days after arriving at her boyfriend’s house in Scarborough.
The woman’s lawyer said his client had self-quarantined after arriving and did not have contact with anyone else.
But Magistrate Andrew Matthews said Vander Sanden’s actions could have undermined all the precautions West Australia has made to curb the spread of Covid19 and handed down a sentence of 6 months.
