Thursday night’s NFL premier saw a significant decline in TV ratings compared to last year’s ratings.
The season-opening matchup between the Chiefs and Texans had 19.3 million viewers tune in. That is a 12.3% drop from last year’s ratings which had 22 million viewers.
Most troubling was the game’s performance in the key 18-49 age group. With that demographic, the game pulled a 5.2 rating, less than half last year’s 12.8 mark.
NBA playoff ratings are also down markedly this year – 23% – making it the least-watched playoff season in 5 years.
Many believe excessive social justice messages have played a role in the reduced size of TV audiences across all sports in recent months.
