Starting this month, all teenagers in British high schools will learn about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer sexual health. The curriculum is now mandatory.
“We want to support all young people to be happy, healthy and safe,” a Department for Education spokesperson told NBC News in an email.
Rather than explored in just one lesson, the guidelines call for the information to be integrated into the curriculum so that all pupils can “understand the importance of equality.”
In new curriculum aimed at elementary school children (which focuses on families and friendships instead of intimate relationships), educators are being strongly encouraged to include LGBTQ examples.
