Breonna Taylor was killed in March as Louisville Metro Police officers were attempting to execute a search warrant at her home. Police were looking for a suspect in a drug trafficking ring.
Several myths have been perpetrated by the mainstream media on the circumstances surrounding Taylor’s death. We attempt to set some of them straight:
Claim: Police were at the wrong apartment.
False: Police had a search warrant for Taylor’s apartment.
Claim: A No-Knock Warrant was used.
Partially False: Police obtained a no-knock warrant but announced themselves when they were at the door. Some witnesses say they did not hear police knock and identify themselves, but one neighbor at Taylor’s complex said they did. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, says he heard pounding at the door but did not hear anyone identify themselves as police officers.
Claim: Taylor was shot while asleep in her bed.
False: Walker says Taylor was awake and standing in her hallway when police entered the apartment. Walker admits to firing first on police when they entered the apartment, believing they were intruders. Police returned fire, striking Taylor who would die on her hallway floor. Walker was not wounded.
Claim: Taylor was involved in drug trafficking.
Mostly false: Police say they were looking for an ex-boyfriend of Taylor’s, Jamarcus Glover. Glover was believed to be the main target in the police’s narcotics investigation that led them to the Taylor apartment. Glover had retrieved packages from Taylor’s apartment previously according to documents and surveillance conducted by the LMPD.
Attorney for the Taylor family say Taylor had dated Glover but that the relationship ended two years earlier and that the pair maintained only a “passive friendship.” But authorities have recorded jailhouse conversations from as recently as January 2020 between Taylor and Glover that show the pair were still in contact and were having conversations that alluded to drug trafficking. Taylor has no offenses related to drug trafficking on her record.
