The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked TikTok from use within Pakistan, saying the video-sharing app does not effectively moderate “immoral and indecent” content.
The ban has gone into effect immediately.
The decision was taken after repeated warnings to TikTok to censor questionable content.
“Keeping in view the complaints and nature of the content being consistently posted on TikTok, PTA issued a final notice to the application and gave considerable time to respond and comply with the Authority instructions for development of effective mechanism for proactive moderation of unlawful online content,” the PTA wrote in a statement.
The PTA says the app can be reinstated if it creates a “satisfactory mechanism” to moderate certain content.
TikTok is immensely popular in Pakistan with the country being one of the top 5 markets for the app outside of China.
