Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed a new nationwide lockdown due to Covid19 in England. The new measures will be imposed for a minimum of one month.
The measure comes as confirmed cases topped the 1 million mark in the UK. The new lockdown will affect only England, with the other three states of the UK being able to set their own policy.
Under the lockdown, bars, restaurants and nonessential stores will close, and people will be ordered to stay home with a few limited exceptions, including work, school and exercise. The restrictions went into effect on Thursday.
“We’ve got to be humble in the face of nature. In this country, alas, as across much of Europe, the virus is spreading even faster than the reasonable worst-case scenario of our scientific advisers,” he said.
