The sentencing of ex-FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith has been delayed until after Inauguration Day. It was originally scheduled for Dec. 10 before being postponed to Jan. 7. It has now been postponed to Jan. 29.
Clinesmith altered an email that confirmed Carter Page was a source for the CIA so that it read Page was “not a source.” The alteration allowed FBI surveillance of Page, who had worked as a foreign policy adviser to the then-Trump campaign, to continue.
Clinesmith, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement and was charged as part of special counsel John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the now-debunked Russia investigation. The offense carries a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Durham’s investigation was supposed to be concluded this summer. It is now unclear when, or if, the results of the investigation will be released.
