A government watchdog group is suing the Justice Department over its decision to share private text messages between two FBI agents in which they made disparaging comments about Donald Trump. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department and is seeking any and all documents relating to the decision to share the text messages publicly.
Last month, the Justice Department reportedly invited journalists to its offices and showed them text messages between FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. Strzok had been a member of the special investigative team looking into the Russia scandal, but was reassigned when special counsel Robert Mueller first became aware of the text messages last summer. Page had also been a member of Mueller’s team but had previously returned to the FBI.
The messages between the two show contempt for then-candidate Trump and express the hope that he lose the presidential race. “Trump is an idiot,” one of the texts read. “Hillary should win 100 million votes to zero,” Strzok writes in another. “I know,” Page responds.
