Demonstrations in Hong Kong turned violent today as clashes erupted at Hong Kong’s international airport. Protestors had shut down one the world’s busiest airports for the second straight day, blocking departure lines and causing the cancellation of more than 200 flights.
Police said they tried to help emergency crews reach a man who was apprehended and beaten by protestors who they accused of being an undercover agent.
Hongkongers are rallying against a proposed law that could have criminal suspects sent to mainland China to face trials. Hong Kong was once a British colony, but control over the island was transferred to mainland China in 1997.
Pro-Beijing Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said the ongoing clashes have put the city on a “path of not return.” The movement is approaching “terrorism” and posed an “existential threat” to the local population. Protestors have also called for Lam’s resignation.
President Trump in comments today urged calm but steered clear of endorsing either side. “The Hong Kong thing is a very tough situation. I hope it works out peacefully. I hope nobody gets hurt. I hope nobody gets killed,” he told reporters.
