Singapore’s biggest telecomm companies have selected Nokia and Ericsson to build it’s next-generation 5G network. China’s Huawei had also been in the running to land the project.
Singapore didn’t exclude any company from consideration but had rather clarified its expectations which had an emphasis on security, resilience and performance, according to Reuters.
The United States has urged foreign governments to forego working with Huawei on any critical 5G infrastructure on security grounds.
The UK chose Huawei to build its 5G network in a surprising move by PM Boris Johnson earlier this year. While the U.S. never publicly demanded the UK change that decision, it’s widely believed pressure brought to bear by the U.S. contributed to Johnson’s decision to rescind that offer.
