Former FBI Director James Comey was questioned last year by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of the investigation into Russian meddling. The interviews with James Comey occurred last year and were hitherto undisclosed. The Justice Department confirmed this morning that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was interviewed by Robert Mueller last week.
The interview with Comey focused on a number of memos he wrote that documented a series of one-on-one interactions with President Trump while he was still FBI Director. In one of the memos, Comey recounts the President as asking Comey to drop the investigation into conversations former National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn had with a Russian Ambassador. “I hope you can let this Flynn thing go,” Comey records the president as saying.
Comey was fired in May. Soon after, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel. Comey had testified while FBI Director several times that there was an ongoing FBI investigation into the Russia scandal and that it included investigating possible collusion with the Trump campaign. Mueller’s questioning of both Sessions and Comey may signify that in addition to the collusion issue, Mueller may be trying to ascertain whether any obstruction of justice was committed as well.
