MLS Players Booed for Taking Knee During National Anthem in Texas

Major League Soccer players from FC Dallas and Nashville SC were booed after they took a knee during the National Anthem before their match Wednesday night in Frisco, Texas. The crowd also chanted “USA! USA!” during the game.

MLS allowed up to 5,000 fans to attend the game in person at the 20,500-seat stadium, over concerns about the coronavirus.

Some estimates say only around 3,000 fans showed up.

After the game, Dallas star Reggie Cannon called fans “disgusting” for booing the players and chanting “USA!”

“I think it was disgusting. I think it was absolutely disgusting. You got fans booing you for people taking a stand for what they believe in and millions of other people support this cause…” Cannon said.

“Unfortunately it was played during these times when we asked for the anthem not to be played. It pissed me off that you can’t even have support from your own fans in your own stadium. It’s baffling to me…”

Cannon would go on to describe that last several months of not playing as being “hell” for the players.

“…The last six months have been absolute hell for us. Absolute hell. Because we have to watch other people play soccer, and we’re just sitting home unfortunately contracting COVID from the unfortunate situations that we were put in…”
