Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social media giant will suppress “premature claims of victory by candidates” on Election Night in November.
Zuckerberg did not elaborate as to how the suppression will take place nor what Facebook will consider “premature claims of victory.”
The comments are widely interpreted to be directed at President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.
“This election is not going to be business as usual,” Zuckerberg said in a statement, noting both the difficulties of voting during a pandemic and attacks on the integrity of the results that are likely to come.
“I’m worried that with our nation so divided and election results potentially taking days or even weeks to be finalized, there could be an increased risk of civil unrest across the country,” he said, adding that “our democracy is strong enough to withstand this challenge and deliver a free and fair election.”
