Nevada Parents Group Furious After Graphic Novel Depicting Sex, Drug Use Included in High School Reading List

Headlines Politics U.S.

Parents of high school students in Clark Country, Nevada, as well as the Nevada parents advocacy group Power2Parent, are furious over the inclusion of a graphic novel in that school district’s reading list.

The novel, “Fun Home,” written by author Alison Bechdel, focuses on the life of the author as she comes to terms with her own sexual identity and her relationship with her gay father.

“’Fun Home’ is wildly inappropriate for students as it contains pornographic illustrations, adult themes, drug use, and anti-religious messages,” a webpage set up by Power2Parent on the novel reads. The page also publishes some of illustrations from the book (Warning: Graphic).

Power2Parent says the book was on a reading list given to students as young as 15. After registering their complaints, the principal of Palo Verde High School pulled the book from the reading list.

But parents still want to know why they were not notified in advance about the novel. The Clark County School District has an opt-in policy requiring parental consent for sexual materials.
