The U.S. military is teaming up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to achieve the capability of delivering weaponry and other military cargo to any location in the world in less than one hour.

The Pentagon announced it is working with the Tesla CEO’s space-travel company to develop a rocket capable of traveling 7,500 miles per hour while simultaneously carrying 80 tons of cargo.

“Think about moving the equivalent of a C-17 payload anywhere on the globe in less than an hour,” General Stephen Lyons, head of US Transportation Command, said. “I can tell you SpaceX is moving very, very rapidly in this area. I’m really excited about the team that’s working with SpaceX.”

The technology would essential involve aircraft capable of hauling military cargo travel through orbit to any point in the globe.

A 7,652-mile journey from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to Bagram airbase in Afghanistan in – which now takes 15 hours – would take just one hour with the new SpaceX system.
