Senate Republicans Plan to Object to Electoral College Votes on Wednesday

Headlines Politics U.S.

In a remarkable development, a growing contingent of Senate Republicans are set to announce today they will object to the certification of Electoral College votes on Jan. 6.

The effort, being led by Ted Cruz (R-TX), will reportedly attract other supporters after Cruz makes it official in a statement due later today.

Axios reports those supporters include: Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Mike Braun (R-Ind.), as well as Sens.-elect Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.).

It is also being reported the Senators consider their plans different from those of Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who this week announced unequivocally that he will be objecting to votes in the Electoral College.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been actively trying to thwart such plans, believing that such a political floor fight in the Senate would be “messy.”
