246 Fully Vaccinated People in Michigan Contract Covid19, 3 Die

Headlines Politics U.S.

Michigan data shows 246 fully vaccinated people have tested positive for the Covid19 virus. Eleven of the individuals were hospitalized and three of them have died.

Testing positive for a virus after being vaccinated against is known in the medical community as a breakthrough case. Such cases are usually identified by comparing data on all confirmed and probable cases of Covid19 to records of individuals who have been fully vaccinated.

A person is said to be “fully vaccinated” within the parameters of the Covid19 pandemic when two weeks have passed after the person has received two doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, or a single shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Those vaccines were approved for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year and have been administered in earnest all over the country since January. These breakthrough cases were recorded between January 1 and March 31.

“While the majority of the population develops full immunity within 14 days of completion of their vaccine series, a small proportion appear to take longer to mount a full antibody response,” a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman said.

“We expect to see breakthrough cases with any vaccination, including all the COVID-19 vaccines. The number of potential cases identified to date is not in excess of what might be expected with vaccines with 95 percent efficacy. Studies indicate that even if vaccinated people do become ill, they are far less likely to experience severe illness requiring hospitalization or resulting in death.”

According to the FDA Pfizer’s vaccine is considered 95% effective in preventing severe symptoms of Covid19. Moderna’s is 94% effective and Johnson & Johnson’s is approximately 67% effective.

Michigan is not the only state that has recorded breakthrough cases. Over 120 fully vaccinated individuals in Louisiana have tested positive for Covid. In Oregon 168 vaccine breakthrough cases have been recorded. And in Washington state 100 cases have been identified.

Eight of the cases in Washington resulted in hospitalization and two of the individuals died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced it is creating a new website to provide additional information about such cases. It will include breakthrough data from all 50 states. The site is expected to launch in the next several weeks.
